Instructional Clinic FAQs
Your booking confirmation letter contains a link to sign your waiver. Please share your confirmation email with the other members of your party. Each member is required to sign a waiver for each activity before arriving at Zoar Outdoor. A parent or legal guardian must sign for any participant under 18 years of age.
The waiver link in your confirmation email is synced with your booking. To check that everyone in your party has completed their waiver, please feel free to call our office at 413-339-4010. Our office staff will be happy to double check for you prior to your trip.
NOTE: These waivers are legal documents and, as such, may not be altered. Any participant arriving at Zoar Outdoor with an altered waiver will be asked to sign a new unaltered waiver before they will be allowed to participate in any activity.
While we have an excellent record, water sports have inherent risks. It should be recognized that accidents can and do occur. For this reason, we cannot assume responsibility for injury or loss of property.
Participants in all activities will be required to sign a waiver stating they are aware of the risks involved, that they assume those risks, and are not under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Those with health conditions limiting their normal activities may be prohibited from participation at Zoar Outdoor’s discretion. Pregnant people will be prohibited from participating in Zoar Outdoor Activities.
We do not use nuts in our food, but cannot guarantee that the ingredients in our meals do not contain nuts or other food allergens. If you have food allergies or other special dietary needs, we strongly suggest you bring your own bag lunch in non-glass containers and we will pack it with the other lunches on your trip.
You’re also welcome to call our office with any questions about the menu. If you intend to bring your own meal, please let us know ahead of time, since we take all of the food for the day out on the river with us, and would need to plan on including your food.
Participants need to be physically fit and have no medical conditions that affect their ability to participate in the watersports activity. If you have questions about your ability to participate based on your medical conditions you may want to discuss them with your doctor prior to booking your reservation. You may also use our Participant Requirements as a baseline for expectations and mobility requirements during your course. If you have further questions/concerns our reservation team would be glad to discuss the day with you prior to your booking as well. During your activity please inform your guide/instructor of any potentially life saving medications ex. asthma inhalers, epi injectors etc. that you need to carry with you and where any medications will be located. Also tell your guide/instructor of any other concerns like previous injuries that may affect your day or fears that you may have. We’re here to help you have a great time!
Yes! If you book a private group of three or more participants you'll receive the same rate as our scheduled clinics. We also have discounts for non-profit organizations, camps, clubs, schools and colleges. Check out our private lessons and custom group pages for more detail.
For most of our scheduled paddlesport clinics you will not need to use your own vehicle, although it can sometimes make logistics easier. For most of our private clinics you may be asked to help with shuttles. This typically involves leaving one car at the take-out and driving up to the put-in in another vehicle. Most of the time we will just need help transporting the instructor back to the Zoar vehicle and you will not need to help transport boats. It is good to bring a towel or small tarp to help keep your seats dry while shuttling.
We run most of our clinics at a ratio of 1:4 (instructor to students) ensuring you’ll get plenty of individual instruction. This can vary for some advanced clinics and rolling clinics which are 1:3 and events or flatwater clinics which may have a higher ratio. In general our scheduled clinics top out at 12 participants, but we occasionally go higher for groups too.
Sure! 10-20% of your trip cost is often customary for a great time, but this is completely at your discretion. If you feel the service you receive from your guide is exceptional, and you want to say “thank you” with a tip, our saying is “although it is not expected, it is always appreciated”. Thank you
Keep your car keys with you during registration, after gearing up for the day we will collect those and put them in a key box, then return them to you when you get back to our base.
We run our trips rain or shine, so you should come prepared for the weather! If we do have to cancel the trip, that decision would be made on the morning of the trip. However, it’s rare that weather forces us to cancel our instructional trips.
Our cancellation policy along with other helpful booking information can be found under our policy section https://www.zoaroutdoor.com/about/policies#policies
Our whitewater helmet sizes for instruction generally run from 53-62cm. We have youth lifejackets (PFD’s) for participants under 90lbs and adult sizes for over 90lbs. Our lifejackets range in chest sizes from 30” up to 56”. Many sit-inside whitewater kayak models have an upper weight limit of about 250lbs. We encourage you to inform us in advance to discuss boat options if you weigh more than 250lbs.
