When the spring thaw turns New England rivers into a torrent, the Millers River in western Massachusetts comes into its own. Class III and IV rapids peak at the Funnel where the large diagonal waves and holes demand total concentration and all-out paddling from everyone aboard the rafts. At high flows the Millers is a non-stop rollercoaster. At medium and lower levels, it’s a moderate raft trip with a big burst of excitement at the Funnel. Rafting on the Millers River is ideal for those seeking a great springtime raft trip for all rafters ages 12 and up. Participants on this trip may be required to swim aggressively wearing a personal flotation device in rocky, fast whitewater.

A Typical Day

We raft an eight-mile section of class III-IV whitewater on the Millers River. The entire trip, including lunch and transportation, takes about 5-6 hours, depending on conditions. Zoar Outdoor reserves the right to move a trip to another section of the river or a different river depending on water levels. Please allow extra time at the end of your day to accommodate the possibility of a later day. Please arrive at 10:30 am for registration (10:15 am for groups of 20 or more). This trip comes with a picnic-style lunch, and a spread of chips & salsa, hummus or black bean dip, with choices of cold cuts and cheeses, as well as lettuce, tomato, condiments, and dessert and a drink. This trip also comes with a side dish of vegetarian soup or chili.

Expect everything you bring with you on the river to get wet. Wetsuits, splash jackets, and neoprene river booties are included in the price of this trip. If you do not want to wear the river booties provided, you are required to wear sneakers or other shoes that can be secured to your feet. No flip-flops or Crocs. Bring a wool or synthetic top to wear under the splash jacket. Synthetic tights under the wetsuit and wool or synthetic socks can add extra insulation as well. Please do not wear cotton as it will keep you cold once it gets wet.

Bring required medications and extra money for souvenirs, coin-operated showers, etc. Before the trip, leave valuables including money and dry clothes and towels for after the trip in your locked vehicle. We will collect your car keys after registration and return them to you when you get off the boats.

For all of our whitewater trips, guests must be able/willing to do the following: Wear a helmet and our personal flotation device (PFD), respond to and follow verbal or visual instruction, roll from front to back in water while wearing a PFD, demonstrate dynamic sitting position (sitting upright), and float with feet up in water. Specifically for the intermediate Millers River trip, guests should be able to paddle in the rapids, but with frequent rests. Remain calm, lay flat, and orient their body so their feet are aiming downstream if they find themselves unexpectedly in the water. On the West trip, guests need to be prepared to spend a longer period of time in the water with an unexpected swim, and should be able to swim to the nearest raft or shore in current. Our PFDs fit a maximum chest size of 56 inches.

Don’t forget to read your confirmation letter (there is a lot of useful information in there!). Call our office if you have any additional questions. We’re always happy to help!
