Trip Info

This winter adventure follows various branches of the Deerfield River through a beautiful and remote landscape.  We will experience a wonderful mix of wild nature and history as we travel along old rail beds and through the pristine forest of Southern Vermont.

Our trip follows a section of the 300-mile Catamount XC trail and starts along the Deerfield River beneath the impressive Searsburg Penstock-a unique structure that transports water from Searsburg Reservoir to the powerhouse downstream.  This historic piece of industry is still functioning, and helps give the Deerfield its well-earned name ‘The Hardest Working River’.

We continue past the Searsburg Dam to the confluence of the Deerfield with its East Branch.  This scenic spot offers a great opportunity for photos and a delicious snack!  From here we have the option of turning onto the historic East Branch Trail or doubling back to head downhill to our starting point.

This trip is available as both a snowshoeing adventure and a cross country ski adventure.  This trip is based out of our Zoar Adventure Center in Wilmington, VT.
