Hiking at Mt. Tom

No matter where you are in the Deerfield River Valley there are beautiful hiking trails just a short car ride away. Trails range from easy family hiking to steep climbs that push your endurance all the way to the summit.

High Ledges Wildlife Sanctuary

From Zoar Outdoor, High Ledges Wildlife Sanctuary is just a 20-minute drive east in the lovely town of Shelburne, MA. High Ledges is home to one of the more iconic images in the area. The easy one-mile hike brings you to a gorgeous panoramic view of the valley. There are longer trails that offer options up to 5 miles or so.

Hoosac Range Trail to Spruce Hill

Another great family hike in the area is the Hoosac Range Trail to Spruce Hill. The trail is located in North Adams, MA, which is a 20-minute drive in the other direction from Zoar Outdoor. The first views are from Sunset Rock nearly a mile into the trail with views northeast towards the town of Florida. Nearly two miles into the hike, a short spur trail leads to an eastern vista where the rolling hills of the Berkshires can be admired. All-in-all, the Hoosac Range Trail offers a 5.6 mile round trip.

Negus Mountain

Closer to Zoar Outdoor is Negus Mountain. The summit is directly above Zoar Gap and the hike itself is moderately difficult.  It’s perfect for a group looking for a short challenging ascent. The two-and-a-half mile round trip takes you over rocky terrain to reach an exposed ridge where the views are spectacular.
