Fall Festival Season

By 829 Dev

As a paddler, once the spring runoff has dried up and the creeks stop running, I start looking forward to fall.  Many of the dam controlled creeks in the northeast have scheduled releases in the fall and many also coincide with festivals.  Every year the fall creek season kicks off with Beaverfest, a 3 day creek festival in New York.  There are three sections of the Beaver all offering a little different challenge and the Raquette also releases this weekend.  Taylorville is the easiest sections and is a great warm up for the harder sections running later in the weekend.  There are plenty of fun moves and there are always a lot of spectators.  On the second day, the Moshier section releases.  This section only has one scheduled release each year and it is a lot of fun.  It starts off with a 10 foot waterfall that is great for freewheels and big boofs.  Heading downstream there are all kinds of fun rapids leading up to Moshier Falls.  This is the hardest rapid on the section and always draws a big crowd.  There are a lot of really fun moves in Moshier and it is one of my favorite rapids on the Beaver.  After running the Moshier section, it’s time to head over to the Eagle to play on some slides.  The Eagle section is very short but it packs a lot of excitement into its quarter mile length and it’s easy enough to walk back up for additional laps.

While it has always been called Beaverfest, there hasn’t been much of an organized festival off the river.  This year everyone camped out in a big field and there was a band, bonfire, and several vendors had set up tents.  It was a great opportunity to meet other paddlers and connect with old friends.  It seemed like everyone was having a great time.

Next month the festivals continue with Moosefest and as the leaves drop off the trees and the rain picks up we should start seeing some water in some of the natural flow creeks.  I hope to see you out there enjoying some of the best creeking the northeast has to offer!
