The race starts at Berkshire Eas t ski area. The first leg is a 4.3 mile run that starts on pavement throug h the town of Charlemont\, then heads into a mix of woods roads and trails up around the Warfield House before descending to the Run-Bike transition at Zoar Outdoor.
\nThe bike leg is a rolling\, out-and-back\, 18 mi le road course that heads west on Rte 2 before turning onto Zoar Rd and pr oceeding up to the Hoosac Tunnel. It then returns to Rte 2 on the same rou te\, and turns west\, ending at the Bike-Paddle transition at the Mohawk P ark Campground.
\nThe paddle leg starts with a short run from the pa rking lot of the Mohawk Park Campground down to the river. Boaters then go left up river for a short attainment section\, before rounding a buoy and heading back down stream. The course is just under two miles of class 1 p addling\, with one spot that can be a class 2 where another small river jo ins the Deerfield. The takeout is at the Paddle-Adventure Run transition a rea on the right shore just past the Route 8A bridge.

It heads up the road to Berkshire East\, then around the perimeter of the parking lot\, where several small obstacles are located\, then up into the base area\, and out into a wooded area surrounding the tubing park. \nFor more than 25 years\, American Whitewater has hosted the De erfield RiverFest to celebrate the successful dam relicensing process that provides 32 annual whitewater releases on the Dryway section and 106 annu al whitewater releases on Fife Brook section of the Deerfield River.
\nThe main festival activities take place on Saturday evening from 5-10pm at Berkshire East\, Charlemont\, MA and provide entertainment for both pa ddlesport and non-paddlesport enthusiasts young and old. Admission to the event is $10 per person.
\nThe Deerfield River Festival is a critica l fundraiser for American Whitewater\, and is one of their premiere events . \n\n\nDo you need a kayak for the paddling segment of the Be rkshire Highlands Pentathlon? Zoar Outdoor is offering $33 sit on top kaya k rentals for experienced river paddlers. The rental also includes a paddl e\, PFD\, helmet\, wetsuit\, water shoes\, and jacket.

Renters will come into Zo ar Outdoor (7 Main St\, Charlemont MA in the “Outfitters Shop”) on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning to complete a rental waiver and watch a shor t video. Hours are Friday 3/27 9am-6:30pm\, Saturday 3/28 7:30AM-5PM.
\nZoar Outdoor will stage the boats and paddles at the kayak launch at Mohawk Park Campground (559 Tea St rt 2\, Charlemont MA)\, and racers will need to affix their bib number to a boat at the park. Zoar Outdoor will p ick up the kayaks and any rental gear at the takeout of the kayak leg belo w the Route 8A bridge (the bridge you cross over to enter Berkshire East\, across from Dirt Church Brewing).
