| Why Bent Shaft Paddles Rule | 2 |
Well, the summer is winding down and we?re gearing up for fall and looking forward to running some different rivers, like the West and the Farmington (see back page for details). The Deefield continues to run into mid-October and tends to be less crowded in the fall and the foliage should be spectacular soon. It?s just starting to show some hints of color now.
Inside, kayak instructor Heather Young explains why she has become a bent shaft paddle convert and why you might want to consider trying one too. There is also a recap of the Deerfield Riverfest and Rodeo that took place in Charlemont in August this year. |
Come see us for the Annual End-of-Season Sale October 6-7 (Columbus Day weekend). We should have a variety of used gear available in addition to the used boats from the list inside. You can also bring your own stuff to sell on consignment. See page 3 for details.
Chris Spelius will be visiting us again this fall teaching a rodeo clinic September 29 & 30 and presenting a slide show Saturday night on paddling in Chile where he operates a paddling and rafting outfit in one of the most spectacular paddling destinations in the world. |

Bent shaft paddles rule. Not enough information for you?
The point of a bent shaft is to enable you to paddle with straight wrists,
not slightly torqued wrists. This might not seem like a big deal if you only
paddle once in a while or aren't prone to wrist problems. However, for some of
us who have experienced ever increasing amounts of lost paddling time each year
due to wrist problems, bent shaft paddles have changed our lives. Designed for
ergonomic comfort, the bent shaft completely eliminated my lost paddling days.
Since buying one, I haven't lost a single day to tendonitis flare ups. The year
before I lost two weeks, not counting the days I paddled anyway.
The benefit of an ergonomic shaft is still argued, however, in the paddling world
and no consensus has been reached. Some feel that the bent shaft interferes with
proper blade use in some strokes. The reason behind this is that with some bent
shaft paddles, the blade is placed either in front or behind the grip, not in a
straight line from it. Having the blades out of line like this means ostensibly
that certain strokes will be easier, and others harder. Werner Paddle asserts that
their "Neutral Bent Shaft" eliminates this bias by placing the blade in line with the grip.
Personally, while I have noticed that my Adventure Technology (AT) paddle makes paddling
easier in any number of ways, I haven't noticed any strokes being harder. Yes, they are
expensive, although several companies are now competing on the bent shaft market, so one
might assume that the price will begin to drop. We can all hope, anyway. Right now, the
big names on the bent shaft market are Adventure Technologies and Werner Paddles, both of
which we carry in the shop. Mitchell Paddles makes a composite fiber and wood bent shaft
paddle, and Waterstick, the
|
new kid on the market, makes some truly funky bent shaft paddles with odd backwards
looking blades. Those that have Waterstick paddles, however, love them.
In any case, the first time I used my paddle I loved it. I will never go back. It has completely ruined me for any other paddle. It's easy on my joints, slides through the water at the right times, and holds solid when I need it to. It's made rolling easier, and my shoulders don't ache as badly at the end of the day. In my mind, it was worth every single penny. I'd rather go paddling without my boat than without my paddle.
AT3 Available in two shaft/blade configurations: AT3 EDGE Playboating/performance Neutral power face, Kinetic profile AT3 ZEN River/Creek/Surf Dihedral power face, Cleaver profile AT2 Freestyle - high performance playboating design, foam core blades Price range: $247.00 - $409.00

Wrap-up
The 8th Annual Deerfield Riverfest was held on August 4th in Charlemont and
was a great success. The Fest is a fundraiser for American Whitewater, an
organization whose mission is "to conserve and restore America's whitewater
resources and to enhance opportunities to enjoy them safely." American
Whitewater auctioned off a bunch of cool gear, including several boats, a wide
variety of vendors displayed their gear, two local bands played, and the nails
game at the Dagger booth was a huge draw this year. Many volunteers worked hard
to make this event possible, setting up and taking down the event, manning the
gate and the Silent Auction, helping to run the rodeo, and organizing the barbecue.
Mike Coleman did an awesome job again this year organizing the event locally and
Mike Phelan traveled here from North Carolina to help out and represent American Whitewater.
The 5th Annual Whitewater Rodeo on the Dryway was also a great success. We had 20
participants this year. For the second year, we tried the new format which was
well-received last year: instead of using Dragon?s Tooth only, the participants
travelled down the river, stopping and being judged at four other river features,
a splat rock, an eddy line, a wave, and a hole, before they came to Dragon?s Tooth
for the grand finale. Our judges included a number of local paddlers as well as
paddler "celebrities," Ken Whiting and Kevin Varette of Liquid Skills on
the Ottawa in Canada. (Check out their kayak school Liquid Skills.)
For the second year in a row, Zoar Outdoor?s own kayak instructor, Jim Sullivan of
Longmeadow, MA, was the winner. Second place went to Jim Buley of Maryland who was
paddling the Deerfield for the first time ever and third place went to John Kennedy of
Worthington, MA. Nice job, guys! Sadly, there were no women in the rodeo this year. : (

Outdated clinic info removed. This workshop is designed for paddlers who want to teach flatwater, moving water or whitewater kayaking. Our highly experienced ACA Instructor Trainers present the most up-to-date teaching and paddling techniques. This course has two parts: an Instructor Development Workshop, in which the Instructor Trainer presents teaching techniques and works to improve the paddling skills of aspiring instructors, and the Instructor Certification Workshop, in which the aspiring instructors teach a mock whitewater course. Certification is based on both paddling and teaching skills and is not guaranteed at any level. This course is for advanced paddlers with some teaching experience. 4-day full workshop

September 22 and 23 you?ll find the cool kids at the West River in Jamaica, Vermont. This river offers class II through IV rapids and is a great next step up from Fife Brook (it?s higher volume and pushier than the Deerfield). We offer guided kayak River Runs down both the upper (class III-IV) and lower (class II) sections. Give us a call to find out more.
October 13-14 and 20-21 bring releases on this creeky class III-IV run in the southwest corner of Massachusetts. It?s a technical run that will hone your river reading skills. There is a slalom race on the first weekend.
This West Virginia classic is well worth the 12 hour drive (from Charlemont). It offers a class III-IV Lower section and a class IV-V Upper section. Huge water and huge play abound! Just be sure to paddle it with someone who knows the lines. Gauley Fest is September 22nd and is a fantastic party and a benefit for American Whitewater. The Gauley runs for 6 weekends (including Friday & Monday for most of them) starting the weekend after Labor Day.
October 13 and 14 is the Moose Fest. There are several runnable sections of the Moose River near Old Forge, NY, from the class II Middle section to the class V Bottom. Even if you are not ready to run the big drops on the Bottom Moose, it is a great river to spectate because of its extreme pool-drop nature and its accessibility from the road.
The Tohickon is a class II-III tributary of the Delaware River in Pennsylvania very near the New Jersey border near New Hope, PA. It runs the first weekend in November and has a couple of pretty decent playspots. Pray for Indian summer for this weekend!
OF COURSE IF WE GET SOME DECENT RAIN, THERE WILL BE MANY OTHER OPTIONS IN THE AREA. ALWAYS FEEL FREE TO CALL ZOAR IF YOU?RE WONDERING WHERE TO PADDLE - WE LOVE TO TALK ABOUT OUR LOCAL RIVERS!
