Loud music, singing and banging percussion... no, that's not last Friday night in Northampton, but the typical background sounds in the shop since it?s been under construction.

Speaking of construction, the shop isn't the only area undergoing change. Our instructional and outfitting space has a new layout and look which will not only improve gear storage and traffic flow, but will be bright and welcoming as you grab a cup of coffee before your day's adventure. We are also excited about the rafting and livery program's second pavilion. This will assist with registration of afternoon trips and allow ample post trip space. Our office layout and usage has been analyzed and redesigned to provide cutting edge customer service,

while the kitchen crew will be enjoying a little more elbowroom when preparing our tasty clinic and trip lunches.

But, speaking of that shop construction... it will mean more space to show more boats and gear. We've picked up some new product lines this year, including Riot Kayaks, Immersion Research, Viking Paddles, Lidds helmets, Five Ten shoes, and Lotus Design's paddling wear. Look for reviews of these products and others in future issues of the Zoar Rap. I am excited for the season to start and for all the renovations to be completed, however I will miss the sounds of hammers in the morning.

Y Go to Ecuador?
by Bruce Lessels
EJ was persuasive at the ticket counter. The items wrapped in blue and red nylon and strapped with duct tape were surf skis and according to Continental Airlines' computers should fly as excess baggage for a $75 fee. The ticket agent bought it and we were home free.... until the baggage handler loudly asked who belonged to the KAYAKS! We returned to the counter and EJ started talking a mile a minute about how the sport was evolving. He explained that the items in question were surf shoes when the woman at the counter told us that motorized surf skis must go as air freight. He said that these were the latest greatest model of surfboard/kayak hybrid and how they were so new and radical and state-of-the-art that even we (who were going to attend the X Games in Ecuador) couldn't keep up with the terminology

At any rate, we finally wore the woman at the counter down and a supervisor waved our boats onto the plane. We were off to Ecuador to bask in the tropical sun while running crystal clear rivers in remote jungle gorges. And that's mostly what we did.

The demonstrations in Quito didn't bother us except that we couldn't get as close as we would have liked to the old part of town due to the possibility of being tear gassed along with the thousands of indigenous people who were fed up with a government that was inattentive to their needs. So we settled for a bird's eye view from one of the many hills surrounding the city.

On the second day, we met Mark at the airport. He had flown separately from New York. And on the third day we drove over the 14,000-foot Papallacta Pass to the small town (population about 1000) of Baeza 70 kilometers east of Quito.

From Baeza we ran 5 different rivers in 6 days of paddling. We paddled big water on the Quijos, steep stuff on the Cosanga and the Jondachi, big, steep, technical stuff on the Oyacachi, and rock-bouncing rapids on some nameless tributary of the Oyacachi. And on Friday evening at about 6:00 pm they overthrew the president of Ecuador. A military junta took over for the evening, and the next morning the former vice president assumed power following Ecuador's constitutionally mandated system of succession without an election. We asked the special forces soldiers guarding the outpost just outside of Baeza what they thought of the coup d'etat, the new president, and their military

higher ups. "We're not paid to think about such things," one of them told us.

The following Tuesday I hopped a bus back to Quito. As the bus labored up the steep narrow road with 1000-foot drop-offs over Papallacta Pass, my seatmate pointed out the window at an apparent landslide below the road just ahead of us. He spoke in rapid-fire Spanish to a woman in the seat behind us. When he had finished, I asked what was up. "Last week a bus went over the edge of the road just up ahead of us, killing 18 people. My wife and I were on it and we lived by clinging to the ceiling." I was amazed and a bit shocked, but I figured as long as I kept this guy next to me I'd probably survive the rest of the ride to Quito.

The Y as an all-around creekin'/river runnin' machine

I could only take one boat to Ecuador, so I tried to come up with a good compromise between a creek boat, a play boat, and a big-water river runner. The Wavesport Y was all I hoped it would be. On the steeps, its broad flat bow boofed like crazy. Where I needed speed it had more than I expected due to the large flat spot in the hull and the sharp vertical chines, and it surfed just like a Z only with bigger ends. I found it as comfortable as any boat is for me (with a 36-inch inseam), and it has a fair amount of room in the stern for a drybag, throw rope, and other miscellaneous gear. I only wish they'd make a C-1 version!

Deerfield River Tributaries
by Bruce Lessels
You cross over them all summer on the ride to the Dryway; you drive alongside them on the way to Zoar Gap. But unless we've just had an unusually strong rain, they're mere trickles that won't even float your boat. In the spring, however, when the snow melts and the rains come, the tributaries of the Deerfield rival the mainstem for the quality and challenge of their rapids.

At moderate flows, the tribs offer creek-like runs with steep, boulder-choked rapids that range in difficulty from class II to class V+. In high water, they can become raging freight trains that will challenge the most able experts and can be dangerous to those not prepared for their unrelenting power.

Here are a few of my favorites from north to south:

North Branch - This small creek follows Route 100 between the center of Wilmington, Vermont and Mount Snow Ski Resort. Its class II rapids are normally runnable throughout the spring as the manmade snow turns to mush. Put in anywhere below Dover on Route 100. You can paddle as far as Harriman Reservoir or take out in Wilmington. There is a nice play spot just upstream of the main bridge in Wilmington.

West Branch - Five miles of class IV and V whitewater offer some of the most difficult creeking in the area. Classic big-boulder rapids like Face Plant, High Chair and Low Chair keep you on your toes, while the specter of the class V+ Tunnel Vision haunts many a West Branch boater's dreams. Put in at Readsboro Falls and take out at any of several bridges in Readsboro Center. Between 3 and 5 on the gauge behind the variety store in Readsboro represents medium water.

Cold River - When the Dryway has lost its challenge and the West Branch still seems like too much of a leap, the Cold River provides an excellent class IV run to help you work up to more difficult whitewater. Running through a steep wooded valley, the Cold follows Route 2 for its entire length providing an easy out if you find it's more than you bargained for, yet you're only aware of the road in a few places as you enjoy the incredible scenery. Put in at the Savoy bridge a few miles upstream of the State Forest entrance and take out either at the State Forest (avoiding the most difficult rapids) or near the confluence with the main Deerfield.

If it's your first time running non-dam-controlled whitewater, go with someone who has experience at judging river levels, and remember that they can change rapidly with snowmelt or rainfall. And the next time you're on your way to the Deerfield on a hot dry summer day, look carefully at those barren riverbeds you're crossing and imagine them full of boiling, stomping whitewater.

For more information about these and other local rivers, check out Steep Creeks of New England by Greg & Sue Hanlon and/or Classic Northeastern Whitewater Guide by Bruce Lessels, both available in our Outfitters Shop.

Steep Creekin'
for Kayakers and Closed Canoeists

This advanced clinic will teach the specific techniques of creeking including boofing, catching micro-eddies, and reading steep rapids on the fly. We will stress the use of good judgment in analyzing routes and minimizing risk.

Spring runoff should allow us to experience some of New England?s best steep whitewater. The clinic will be taught by top river runners who will pass on their years of experience and in-depth knowledge of creeking technique.

If you want to explore New England?s best hidden whitewater, this clinic is for you. For advanced closed canoe and kayak paddlers only.

Old clinic dates removed.

Rivers of Southern New England

On this 3-day river run we will take advantage of spring water levels to run several Southern New England classics. Possible river choices include the Westfield, the Millers, the North, the Green, and the lesser known branches of the Deerfield. Participants must be competent class II/III boaters and capable of self rescue in cold. fast-moving water. For intermediates and up.

Old clinic dates removed.

The New Face of Instruction

For those who don't know me, my name is Janet Burnett Cowie (see back cover of the brochure for the visual). I am the new Director of Instruction Programs at Zoar Outdoor. After many years as Operations Manager, reviewing charts and reports, my new position gives me more time to do what I love to do: teach people to paddle. Besides my face roaming around Zoar the whole instruction department is getting a face lift. It is amazing what a new coat of paint and new equipment racks will do. As always, the goal of the instruction program is to provide our guests with the best instruction experience possible.

Again this year our clinic schedule is packed with a variety of clinics to satisfy every level of paddler. We have invited several guest instructors to teach at Zoar. Chris "Spe" Spelius will be returning to teach a 2-day clinic October 7-8. Bob Foote will be teaching a 3-day solo canoe play clinic on September 22-24. Kevin Varette, one of the stars of Ken Whiting?s Play Daze video will be instructing Rodeo Clinics for us on May 27-28 and July 29-30. Up-and-coming rodeo stars Tyler Curtis (#3 in Canada) and Chad Hitchins will be assisting Kevin on these weekends. Other clinics we have added this year include Intro to Playboating, Advanced River Rescue, Rescue Week and Steep Creekin?.
