Winter Pool Rolling Sessions January and February 2001 |
2 | It?s been a busy season and a great one for boaters in New England. Flooding in July, extra releases on the West in October, and record rainfalls throughout the summer made for a wide range of boating options in the area which in turn made the Deerfield less crowded than usual. Let?s hope the precipitation continues into the winter for a fantastic skiing/snowboaring season. Nate needs to play with his new Riot snowboard! Speaking of Nate, we?ve really enjoyed having our new Retail Manager around this season. His enthusiasm for the job, the gear and the river is contagious and he inspired us all to get out in our boats as much as possible this summer. | You should have seen how excited he was when the new Wave Sport boats arrived recently! He?s already claimed the demo Evo as his own and he took the EZ on a low water Cold River run recently and found that it is an excellent river-running boat. In case you?re afraid you can?t fit in a boat that?s Nate?s size, take note that there is a Big EZ as well and even Bruce Lessels (6?5?) can squeeze himself into it! If you liked the Forplay, but couldn?t quite fit your toes in there comfortably, the new Score is for you. Come visit us during our winter hours if you get a chance or join us for some pool rolling sessions in Waltham and get a jump on the 2001 boating season. | ||||

November 1 - February 29 Tuesday - Friday |
10am - 4pm | Hi everybody! My first season here at Zoar Outdoor was a very busy one, and I had a really great time. I would like to thank everyone who came in to the Outfitters Shop for making the transition to my new position pretty painless. We have been receiving some new 2001 products that are very exciting. The new Wave Sport boats are the topic of a lot of conversation lately, and they were definitely worth all the hype....these boats rock! They come fully outfitted, right out of the bag. A selection of EZs, Big EZs, Scores, Evos, and all other things Wave Sport are in stock right now. We have demos of all the 2001 Wave |
Sport boats, so you can take them for a test drive. I have paddled them all, especially the Evo and the EZ, and they are totally sick rides and are extremely comfortable.
We will be carrying an expanded Immersion Research line and some very cool stuff from Bomber Gear and Rapidstyle. We will also have new products from Adventure Technologies and Werner, as well as Riot Paddles. I am really excited about next season, and about seeing everybody in the shop and out on the river. Have fun and play safe!

Winter can be the best time to learn how to roll if you do it in a heated swimming pool. Keep your strokes from getting rusty too as our experienced instructors give you lots of individual attention. So, between trips to the snow-covered mountains, come join us at the Waltham YMCA and get a jump on the 2001 boating season!
Pool Clinics During the first half of each session we'll focus on skills such as strokes, leans, and braces. We'll work on improving your execution of these basics so that when you put boat to river next spring you'll be ahead of the game. The second half will be devoted to rolling. For those who can't roll, we'll start from scratch, leading you through a logical progression from hip snaps to paddle motions to a full-blown eskimo roll. If you're an experienced roller, you can work on improving your technique, flipping without setting up, and learning an off-side roll, a hand roll, or any other variation of the basic roll.
The Facilities |
The Instructors Your instructors are all American Canoe Association (ACA) certified and have many years of experience teaching kayaking, canoeing, and rolling. Some of your instructors will be Bruce Lessels, a former World Whitewater Champion and author of the Whitewater Handbook, Janet Burnett Cowie, Director of Instruction Programs at Zoar Outdoor, Nate Kie, Retail Manager at Zoar Outdoor, and Karen Blom, Personnel Manager at Zoar. Our low student-to-instructor ratio guarantees that you will receive the personalized attention our instruction program is known for, and our flexible instruction method uses both the C-to-C roll and the Modified Sweep roll to accommodate people with different body types and to make learning fast and enjoyable.

Zoar Outdoor is sponsoring a 72-hour, hands-on Wilderness First
Responder course from January 15th to 23rd, 2001. This intensive
backcountry medical training course will show students how to deal
with medical emergencies when they are miles from help and dialing
911 is not an option. There will also be a 16-hour refresher course
on January 13th & 14th for students who have previously taken the
72-hour course and need to update their certification. Wilderness medicine differs from traditional first aid in three respects. First, transport times are measured in hours and days instead of minutes. Second, severe environments dramatically increase the complexity of any emergency and heighten the risks to patients and rescuers. |
Third, limited equipment makes improvisation and resourcefulness
essential. Courses are taught by professional instructors from Wilderness Medical Associates, leaders in the field of wilderness medicine. Classes are fast-paced, with mornings devoted to lectures and afternoons spent outside working on rescue simulations. A number of realistic simulations, complete with fake wounds and stage blood will be conducted. This course is recommended for all outdoor professionals and enthusiasts who spend time in remote areas away from traditional rescue and medical options. |
Old course dates and prices removed. Click here for current course info. Please note that the 72-hour course includes CPR certification, but the 16-hour course does not. |
