November 5, 2008 by Blair Winans
Zoar Outdoor, has once again been awarded the bid to host the Wildwater National Championships on the Deerfield River in Western Massachusetts. This event scheduled for August 1 – 3, 2008 has been designated an international race by the International Canoe Federation’s Chairman, Jens Perlwitz. “The Deerfield River is a wonderful wildwater venue and our 2007 Nationals were well attended by the Canadians. We expect the 2008 race to be very well attended by racers from the US, Canada and potentially other countries”, states John Pinyerd, USA Wildwater Committee Programs and Events Director.
Zoar Outdoor has a long history of running national and international races on the Deerfield River and last hosted this event in 2007. Last year was such a success that Zoar was asked to submit a bid again for this year’s event. During the 1990s, Zoar hosted a number of national competitions on the Deerfield River including the Slalom Nationals, Junior Team Trials, Open-Boat Nationals, and the Wildwater Nationals in 1993 and 1995.
The actual races will be held on Saturday, August 2nd and Sunday August 3rd and will include classes for Juniors, Masters and Grand Masters levels to encourage more paddlers to participate. For more information, please contact the Race Director, Karen Blom via email: karen@zoaroutdoor.com

Zoar Outdoor Raft Guide Receives Prestigious State Award
November 5, 2008 by Blair Winans
February 7th, 2008
Long-time Deerfield River Raft Guide, Howard Bronstein, was recently nominated for the Governor’s Hospitality Award for his record of excellent customer service as an employee of Zoar Outdoor. Bronstein, a resident of Plainfield, has worked for Zoar Outdoor as a raft guide and trip leader for the past 10 years. Each year the State of Massachusetts honors individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the Massachusetts tourism industry. This award honors a “front-line” or “behind the scenes” volunteer, or paid staff person who has exemplified the true “spirit” of Massachusetts hospitality by providing outstanding service to visitors and the tourism industry over a significant period of time. This year the Mohawk Trail Association has chosen to nominate Bronstein.
According to Zoar Outdoor Rafting Manager, Kevin McMillan, “Howard has always known that a guest’s experience is much more a function of their interactions with their guide and with other guests than it is a function of the weather or other circumstances of the day. On mornings when the weather is less than ideal, Howard takes a leading role in conveying the importance of a positive attitude to other staff so they’ll convey the same attitude to their guests.”
“We make a point of hiring our guides from a wide range of ages, because we have found that guides who are in their forties and fifties lend a level of maturity to the entire staff that often proves valuable. Howard is one of these anchors and we count on his sense of perspective to help keep the staff on an even keel”, states Bruce Lessels, President and owner of Zoar Outdoor. Bronstein will be honored at an awards breakfast on February 29, at the 21st Annual Massachusetts Governor’s Conference on Travel & Tourism in Boston at the Fairmont Copley Plaza.Governor Deval Patrick will present the awards to this year’s recipients.

This year the National Wildwater Committee has decided to make a week (July 27 – Aug. 3) out of the Nationals with fun, easy races and training camps, clinics, talks and a cookout. The committee is planning on providing wildwater boats and wavehoppers for paddlers to try out and to use in an easy race.
Most events during the week prior to the Nationals will be held on Zoar Gap, a 10-mile, class II-III run on the Deerfield River, and the public is invited to come watch. Experienced paddlers are invited to participate in the week’s events. For more information contact Zoar Outdoor at 800-532-7483.

in the Deerfield River Watershed from southern Vermont down through the
western Franklin County region. The presentation will start at 6:30 pm

His recent backcountry adventures have involved skiing out his back
door in Heath and heading north into southern Vermont. Blackmore has
the uncanny ability to find the last patches of skiable snow in the
region. “Snow stays longer on the shaded northern faces of the slopes
and this year we skied almost into May”, states Blackmore”.

forester, and as a substitute teacher. He is currently doing
landscaping and tree work. He is also a guitar singer/song writer and
is currently working on a music CD. His skiing video will feature some
of his original guitar songs”.
