The gauge on AW was showing the Pemi around 600 cfs which is a pretty fun level for the park and play hole at the takeout. With a free day and a great level, I made plans to meet a friend at the play hole for the afternoon. Unfortunately when we arrived, the river was running at over 1000 cfs and the hole had washed out.
This was only the second time I had paddled a wildwater boat so it was definitely a learning experience. For some reason (mostly I was off line), I decided that plugging rodeo hole was the line I should take through the tooth.
Demofest is one of my favorite events each year. It is a great opportunity to connect with the local boating community and help everyone work to improve their skills while supporting many of the manufactures that Zoar represents. Due to release times, the mornings generally take place on flatwater and/or fish flow river levels. This allows us to focus on strokes, maneuvers, freestyle and more. In the afternoon we have the release on both the Fife Brook Section of the Deerfield and on the Dryway. Our afternoon clinics take advantage of the releases and focus on river running, rescue and river maneuvers and freestyle.
The community at Zoar has always been one of my favorite parts of working there. While Zoar staff members often move on and take jobs in other parts of the country, it is always great to reconnect when they come back to visit. After finding out that Tyler, a long time raft guide and instructor, would be back in the area for a weekend I made plans to head out to the Deerfield to catch up and do some paddling.
If you're curious about whitewater kayaking, this is the best weekend of the summer to give it a try! These playful whitewater kayaks are a blast, and we're ready to give you the foundation of skills in a comfortable and supportive learning environment. Click Here
Every year, for one day, we get to one of Vermont’s hidden gems - the West River. The West River is a perfect mix of adventure and leisure - it has a little bit more adventure than the Zoar Gap and is a little mellower than the Dryway.
