It has been a pretty exciting season for me. I had the opportunity to work with Katelyn, who was interning at Zoar and watch her develop as a paddler and as an instructor. It was really exciting to watch her challenge herself and step up her boating in a big way.
The Deerfield River is probably the most paddled river in New England due to its regular schedule of whitewater releases from Fife Brook dam and from #5 dam (the Monroe Bridge Dryway), but did you know that the Fife Brook section runs almost every day of the year?
The federal relicensing of the dams on the Deerfield River turned this great recreational resource into one of the most popular whitewater runs in the East. We interviewed some of the key players in the relicensing that took place in the early 1990s to see how the process of coming together around the river resulted in a big win for all.

Every year, for one day, we get to one of Vermont’s hidden gems - the West River. The West River is a perfect mix of adventure and leisure - it has a little bit more adventure than the Zoar Gap and is a little mellower than the Dryway.
