Zoar Outdoor Celebrates 20th Anniversary With Introduction of Zip-Line Canopy Tour Adventure

by Bruce Lessels

Charlemont, MA— Zoar Outdoor received approval this week to build the first zip-line canopy tour in Massachusetts. Located on the ridge behind Zoar’s base in Charlemont, the tour will lead adventurers on an aerial trek through the woods by means of zip lines and sky bridges suspended in the trees.  Zoar Outdoor plans to call the new attraction, Deerfield Valley Canopy Tours and set an opening date of June 1, 2009.

Deerfield Valley Canopy Tours will consist of 9 to 10 dual-cable zip lines between platforms suspended as high as 60 feet in the trees as well as 1 to 2 sky bridges.  In keeping with Zoar’s commitment to minimizing environmental impact and fostering positive outdoor experiences for guests, the forest canopy will be as natural as possible. Canopy tours are part of a new and growing trend called Geotourism – tourism that sustains or enhances the geographic character of a place.

In addition to an exciting ride, participants will experience stands of oak, pine, maple, hemlock, and birch trees that comprise a typical New England second growth forest.  The canopy tour will also offer ideal spots for interpretive lessons about the forest and spectacular views of the northern Berkshires.

Zip-lining is a great way to get outdoors, away from your desk and overcome your fears. It is a unique way to nudge you out of your comfort zone to face new physical, as well as mental challenges. Previous experience is not required and groups of friends or family can enjoy this together in a small intimate group as two guides facilitate your aerial trek through a New England canopy.

Given the current economic climate, Zoar Outdoor President, Bruce Lessels predicts that, "families will still want to have fun next summer and will look for adventures closer to home that are unique and offer superior value. The Deerfield River area and Deerfield Valley Canopy Tours fit the bill."

Each tour will take about 3 hours to complete for a group of eight people plus two guides.  Tours are for ages 10 on up with some weight limitations.  Reservations are now being taken on-line through the Zoar Outdoor Canopy Tour website.  For more information, visit www.deerfieldzipline.com or call 800-532-7483.
