Winter update and first event of 2015
by Elaine Campbell
Winter has been long, cold and snowy in VT! Luckily, Jeff and I like winter.
We spent 10 days in the Florida Keys doing a bit of vacationing. We brought our SUP’s and had an awesome trip paddle boarding, eating fish and just relaxing. The rest of winter we pretty much snowboarded, xc skied, snowshoed, and did a weekly pool session.
Winter is not letting up in the northeast. Temps have been a bit cold and it snowed Saturday, Sunday and Monday! I was able to get a day at Tville in CT, a couple days on the Sherman Reservoir when a small piece defrosted then it froze again and a couple days on the Fife Brook in my wild water boat. I was planning on going to WV like a week ago but then we both got really sick and are still fighting this darn cold.
My first event of the year was this past weekend the Berkshire Highlands Pentathlon in Charlemont, MA. It’s a run, bike, kayak, obstacle course, hike/ski. I’ve done it a few times and it’s really fun especially when you are on a team. I was on Team Outta Shape as the kayaker. I’d like the record to show that we were not out of shape just moved a little slower than everyone else. A cause for that might have been the wine we decided to drink the night before! The name fit our team well since Simpson gives you a donut when you finished your leg.
The weather was typical for this year cold and snowing. The organizers did a great job and really did a great job keeping the event safe. Due to the weather conditions the bike and kayak was cut short. The kayak went from 5 miles to 1 mile. I wasn’t as bummed about it as I would of been if I felt 100% healthy. Jeff actually bailed on competing because he was also sick and he was going to duo it.
Team Outta Shape did just fine. I think we placed in the middle of the pack for Teams of five. The best part is we had a lot of laughs! A few moments I’ll remember is when Di was about to finish the run and a little kid almost took her out at the finish line. Nicole got on her bike and forgot to buckle her helmet and had to stop and do it. Ali during the ski never clipped into her boot binding so skied the slalom course half tele, half alpine. We should of called ourselves Team Shit Show! That might be our name next year.
Anyway, I’ve been splitting wood for next winter waiting for the snow to melt to go paddle. My next event is the Tuckerman Inferno in NH. I’m looking forward to it with Team Broads!
