Werner Double Diamond Review

By 829 Dev

This is my first year using a Werner Double Diamond and I’m loving it. I’ve used a few different paddles by other companies in the past and I have to say, the Werner Double Diamond is far superior. It’s lightweight, durable, and the neutral bent shaft has a natural feel in your hands.

I use a Double Diamond small bent shaft, zero degree, 194cm and I’m around 5’4”. Having a small shaft is new to me. I have found that it really makes a difference in control when you are playing in a beefy hole or big fast wave. Having a smaller shaft, I don’t grip the paddle as tightly as I would with my previous paddles. With them, I’d grip much tighter because the shaft was bigger resulting in fatigue in my arms, especially my elbows. Another benefit of the small shaft is when you are paddling in cold weather wearing mittens or gloves. You tend to grip more when wearing gloves or mittens which, in turn, will cause fatigue, but it can also lead to your hands getting colder much faster. I don’t know how true that is, but I swear when I’m wearing mittens and I’m gripping the paddle too tight, my hands get colder much faster than when my hands are a bit more relaxed.

My double diamond is the neutral bent shaft which is all carbon with dynel edges that are reinforced with kevlar. This makes the paddle extremely strong to handle tagging rocks with. A straight shaft is available as well. This is a fiberglass shaft with carbon blades that also has dynel edges that are reinforced with kevlar. Both styles are light weight and strong as heck!

The mid-sized blades that are down turned are perfect for all size paddlers. I love the shape of the blades. I have found that I get a lot of power out of the blades and the catch and release is ridiculously quick and effective for tricks. I also love the paddle for river running in my playboat. Having the mid-sized blades you get a lot of power from each stroke creating lots of speed.

I’m loving life with my Double Diamond and if you are in the market for a new paddle for freestyle kayaking, this is the one to get. You can order a custom or standard one from Zoar Outdoor.
