The New England Triple Crown
by Elaine Campbell
Another awesome Triple Crown has happened. The organizers and volunteers did an amazing job putting on this event and the Junior Olympics at the same time. New England was having a crazy heat wave, it was around 100 degrees out for a few days. The water level was around 2.3 so the hole wasn't too shallow but a little flushy so it made the freestyle event a bit tricky. The Wild Water race was longer than the past because the broken dam was removed last summer. The slalom course wasn't challenging so it came down to who can paddle faster without making mistakes.
The womens class was Jessie Stone, Courtney Kerin, newest Team Z and Wave Sport Team Member local teen Katelyn Green, Barrett Phillips in her first competition ever and me. It was great having Katelyn and Barrett enter the event. They paddled hard and had a great time. We all moved on to Sunday since there were only 5 of us competing in the Triple Crown.
My goal for Sunday was to improve my Wild Water time which was 4:24 on Saturday. I made one mistake on Saturday getting sideways to avoid a rock so I didn't want to do that again. I went second since Jeff and I were sharing a boat. The timer screamed go and off I went. I felt really good at the start and pretty much hit every line I wanted except for running over one rock. I was pretty pleased with my run but it was hard to tell if I was fast or not. All the competitors finished the race with no issues except Justin Crannel who's carbon boat pretty much broke apart right at the finish line which was pretty hilarious. His boat was shredded! The results were posted right before the slalom race started and I was in first with a great time of 4:17. My brother Mark who I beat by one second on Saturday beat me by a second on Sunday he had a 4:16 as well as Joe and EJ had a 4:15 so I felt pretty good about my Wild Water time compared to the mens placing 3rd in the mens with my times 2 days in a row. Jessie came in 2nd and Courtney 3rd.
Slalom was up next and I paddled fast and hit gates. I'm pretty sure you are not supposed to hit gates! It was a bummer because one gate hit dropped me into 3rd place for the slalom event. Courtney who was in 4th on Saturday had a great slalom run on Sunday and took 1st with Jessie in 2nd.
Freestyle was the last event in the Triple Crown. Jessie, Courtney and I were all tied for first overall. Who ever won freestyle won the Triple Crown. Courtney in her first ride scored a 260 with like an air loop, space godzilla with air and one with no air, is what I'm guessing. I had one more chance to take 1st and I was able to improve my score to a 240 missing my phonix by just barely flushing, typical but I was able to finish in 2nd and Jessie came in 3rd. Courtney won the Triple Crown, I came in 2nd, Jessie 3rd, Kately 4th and Barrett 5th overall.
Jeff had an awesome day on Sunday and took 5th overall!
I'm back in NY getting ready for the Freestyle World Championships that start September 2nd on the Nantahala in NC.
